Risk assessment
On this page every product moves from screening to a finished assessment. The page has two views: the worklist with all products, and the assessment of one product with a tab per route.
For: Users · Admins
The worklist
At the top are four steps, each with its number of products. Below them a summary, for example "55 products · 50 screened · 24 assessed · 12 with high risk".
- To screen: no screening yet. The highest hazard is at the top.
- Assessment needed: the screening points to a possible risk.
- Measures needed (High priority): an assessment came out High or Very high, or a calculation is above the limit value, and no measure has been recorded yet.
- Done: acceptable, or a measure has been recorded. A product comes back with a new SDS or after screening again.
A row in the worklist
- Why the product is in this step, for example "Skin contact not assessed yet" or "New SDS: check the assessment".
- Under "To do:" open points, such as assessing skin or the CMR registration.
- A button for the next step: Screen, Assess, Record measures or View. "Re-screen" starts the screening again, for example after a change in the work.
- "Batch screen" applies one exposure profile to several products used the same way. Each product gets its own result; a preview comes first.
The assessment of one product
At the top are the product, its hazard levels and the field "Application": how the product is used at the workplace, for example cleaning or mixing. Without an application it cannot be saved. "Back to overview" returns to the worklist; Previous and Next go to the previous or next product still to screen.
- Screening: a few questions about the work. The result is for example "Safe — no assessment needed", "Qualitative assessment needed" (naming the routes that need attention), "In-depth exposure assessment needed" or "Expert judgement" when the situation is outside the method.
- Qualitative: the tabs Inhalation Risk, Dermal Risk and Fire & Explosion. Each gives a level (Low, Medium, High or Very High) with matching measures, based on EMKG.
- Quantitative: a calculation of the exposure per substance with ECETOC TRA, against the limit value from the SDS or the house limit. The result is Passes or Does not pass. It is recommended, not mandatory.
- "Next step" under the result says what to do now, with a button.
Save, recalculate and delete
- "Save Assessment" records the answers and the result. A saved assessment stays as it was saved.
- When the data or the method has changed since, the tab says so, with "Recalculate".
- To delete an assessment, use the bin icon next to "Save Assessment". The "Delete Risk Assessment?" window asks for confirmation.
Recording measures
A High or Very high result, or a calculation above the limit value, stays open until a measure is recorded. Choose which result the measure covers, the type of measure and a short description. The window shows who records the measure; the measure goes into the logbook.
- Substitution
- Technical measure
- Organisational measure
- Quantitatively supported
- Personal protection (last step): only with a justification of why substitution and technical measures are not reasonably possible, and per route.
Why it works this way
The order follows the occupational hygiene strategy of the Dutch Working Conditions Decree (Arbobesluit): tackle the source first, personal protection last. A measure does not lower the level on screen; the level says how risky the work is without the measure, the measure shows what was done about it.
CMR registration
When a product falls under the CMR registration, the Screening tab shows the "CMR registration" block with a few questions, such as the amount per year and the number of employees. Whatever is already known from the screening and the measures, Chemspark takes over.
Who can do what
- User: screens, assesses and records measures for the products of their own location.
- Admin: the same for every location of the organisation.

Workflow
The screening
Every product starts in Risk assessment with a short screening. A few questions about the work decide whether the product is safe as it is used, or whether it needs a further assessment.
Workflow
Risk assessment: inhalation, skin, fire and calculation
When the screening points to a possible risk, an assessment per exposure route follows. The input comes from the SDS and the screening; the risk level and the advice appear straight away.
Workflow
Measures and the worklist
The worklist in Risk assessment shows where every product stands, from screening to done. A high risk stays open until a measure is recorded.
Workflow
Compliance and the CMR registration
Compliance shows which products contain a substance on a regulatory list. For carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic substances, Chemspark also helps with the registration the Dutch Working Conditions Decree (Arbobesluit) requires.
Workflow
Processing a new SDS
When a supplier sends a new SDS, replace the old one. Chemspark first shows what changes and which assessments, workplace cards and labels no longer match because of it.
Page
Product page
The product page shows everything Chemspark read from the SDS of one product, in the order of the SDS. This is where data is checked and corrected, the SDS is replaced, and where you see what has been done with the product: risk assessment and workplace cards.
Page
Workplace cards
A workplace instruction card tells employees on one A4 page what they need to know about a product: the hazards, the protective equipment, safe handling and what to do if something goes wrong. On this page cards are made, tracked and reviewed on time.
